We began with basics. The things we reach for again and again, to fix our hair, to push it up, to get it out of the way, and get on with the day. That was 2010, when we wrote a business plan no longer than a paragraph.
Since then, Kitsch has grown, but we’ve stayed committed to creating beauty solutions that are elevated in quality and sustainability, while supporting our community as the world continues to evolve around us.
That’s how we went from selling hair ties door-to-door, to offering a full range of beauty favorites in more than 20,000 retail locations across 27 countries worldwide.
Female founded and owned, Kitsch is a beauty powerhouse built on positivity and pure hard work. The belief is simple: if you keep going and believe in yourself, you can succeed. From morning till night, life will throw things at us—some good, some difficult.
We want our community to know that whatever happens, they’ll be ready. With easy, fun beauty solutions that are reliable and practical, yet truly special and made as sustainably as possible.
There are these key moments throughout the day that we call “Kitsch Moments”, where there is an opportunity for a reset, a transition, a simple act of self-care that gives you a little boost, and gets you on to the next thing.
It’s these moments we think about whenever we create something new. We imagine people with all hair types, budgets and points of view, navigating and negotiating the twists and turns of their lives. Our goal is to create a support system that gives you a boost whenever you need it, allowing you to treat yourself well and do your best every day–whatever that looks like!
Founder & CEO
Cassandra Thurswell
A small-town girl from Wisconsin, Cassandra Thurswell had big dreams, but not the kind most have when they move to Los Angeles. She just wanted to create something that would mean something to people. She wanted everyone to be able to access little indulgences at affordable prices.
Armed with intuition and containers of hand-made hair ties, Cassandra started Kitsch at age 25. She began by making cold calls from her L.A. apartment and selling door-to-door, creating products for major chain stores before starting her own brand. Though she had a lot to learn about how to run a successful business, she knew she had something the big names didn’t have—an intimate connection with the lives of everyday beauty consumers. If she could give them just what they wanted, in a leveled-up, sustainable way, she imagined things could really click. Cassandra was right.
Striking a sweet spot between mindfulness and manufacturing, she bootstrapped her business and scaled up gradually over the next decade-plus. Staying constantly in touch with her community and their desires, she continues to seek out ways to create better versions of the everyday items people reach for again and again. Now a prominent beauty entrepreneur featured in Forbes and Inc., with product on the shelves at Ulta, Sephora, and Whole Foods, Cassandra continues to learn more every day about how to create elevated, sustainable beauty solutions you can reach for any moment of the day.
